Collecting diecast model cars is a great way for automobile fans to collect and own replicas of their favorite cars. No matter your age, collecting models can be an exciting hobby for everyone. The next best thing to parking a 1970 Chevy Chevelle 454 in the garage, is parking it next to a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and a 2002 Cadillac Escalade DUB Edition on the display shelves of your model cars.

There are many different reasons why people collect diecast cars. People tend to collect them as an investment opportunity or as a hobby. Those who collect them as a hobby will likely aim to collect models in a certain field (ie. auto, construction, farming equipment). Those who like a specific car company (ie. Cadillac, Chevy, Ford) will attempt to collect different models for that specific brand. Those who like a certain manufacturer (ie. Hot Wheels, Jada Toys, Maisto) will try to collect as many models from that company as they can.

The first step in collecting models is deciding on the scale that you're going to collect. Larger-scale premium models (ie. 1/12, 1/18, 1/24) are generally made with attention to detail. Features such as doors, trunk/boot, and hood/bonnet that open, a detailed engine compartment, steerable wheels, glossy exterior paint, and tires mounted on a workable suspension system that replicate 1:1 automobiles. Brands such as Jada Toys and Maisto fabricate custom diecast model cars with features such as custom rims, custom body kits, custom paint jobs, detailed interiors with audio and video systems, and custom grilles. In smaller scales (1/32, 1/43, 1/64) some of the details are often eliminated. In smaller scale replicas, generally the steering do not work, only the front doors and hood open, and the interior is not detailed.

The next step is deciding on what type of models you're going to be collecting. NASCAR diecast models are the most popular model cars that collectors tend to collect as a hobby. NASCAR diecast collectors tend to collect replicas of particular brands (ie. Action Racing, Motorsports Authentics) or NASCAR drivers (Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr.).

As NASCAR and other types of motorsports have become more mainstream, collecting NASCAR collectibles is more popular than ever. Collectors base their choices on different aspects of the cars. Many collectors purchase model cars based on their favorite driver. These collectors tend to collect replicas of every paint scheme the driver has raced or been featured on. Other collectors prefer a particular manufacturer such as Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford or Toyota. Some collectors just purchase NASCAR diecast cars because they are interested in a particular image or logo.

The hottest NASCAR collectibles on the market today tend to represent the leader board. One thing to consider when collecting NASCAR diecast replicas is the preservation of your collection. The tiniest flaw, scratched paint, dented molding, or broken wheel will devalue your over all collection.
